“Uchikake” is usually heavily brocaded or embroidered with the motif of congratulations such as cranes, pines, flowing water and a bounty of flowers. “Uchikake” is an unbelted full-length outer robe worn over the kimono. The bottom of Uchikake is padded to trail along the floor.
During the Edo period, it was worn by women of Samurai, warrior, or noble families on special occasions. Since then, it had become a part of Japanese traditional bridal costume.
Now it is only used for a wedding ceremony and collections. The design and technique for the Uchikake is wonderful and sophisticated.
